Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Society (RAGMS) Field Trips
We take a field trip each month to a location of interest to rockhounds including dig sites where we collect mineral specimens such as petrified wood, jasper, thunder eggs, Oregon Jade, Copco Agate, gold and many more. We also visit other clubs, museums, and even the workshops of our members at their homes to see how the pros do it.
Depending on the trip, we always recommend to dress for the season and be prepared for the weather. Bring plenty of water, a lunch, the appropriate rock hounding gear (rock hammers, chisels, etc) for the type of trip we'll be going on. A bucket or backpack to carry your specimens and a spray bottle of water to clean them in the field. Walking sticks are good when covering a lot of terrain. Members and their invited guests must sign waivers for the club and they can be found in the gift shop.
Most field trips leave from the museum at 9am, but check the web site as the date approaches to double check the time and make sure the trip hasn't been rescheduled or cancelled due to bad weather etc. Feel free to call Eric for more information, but be aware that the earlier you call him, the sooner he will get back to you. It is very difficult to get everyone organized to go at the museum at 9am, while talking to people on the phone at the same time. If you call at 5 or 10 minutes to 9:00, he may not call you back until he has everyone on the road already. Eric Lindquest: 541-301-7644
2012 Field Trips
February
Sams Valley Meteorite Hunt
We will meet at the museum at 10am instead of 9 to let the weather warm up a little. We will proceed to the Sams Valley area near Gold Hill after that. There is a short hike on a dirt road about a half a mile uphill to the spot in the woods near God Hill. Our guide, Tony Gallios will be taking us to the place where he used his metal detector to locate the meteorite that was spotted by Sharon from Accurate Locaters in Gold Hill. The meteorite was recently featured in the Mail Tribune and is only the 7th meteorite to be found in Oregon.
Location: Sams Valley near Gold Hill
Date: Saturday, February 25th, 2012
Time: 10:00am at the Crater Rock Museum
Notes: Bring water and a lunch and dress in warm layers. Bring a bucket or backpack for any specimens you may find. If you have a metal detector or a large magnet, they will be most helpful in locating anything of value.
