Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Society (RAGMS) Field Trips

We take a field trip each month to a location of interest to rockhounds including dig sites where we collect mineral specimens such as petrified wood, jasper, thunder eggs, Oregon Jade, Copco Agate, gold and many more. We also visit other clubs, museums, and even the workshops of our members at their homes to see how the pros do it.

 

September 2010

Annual Davis Creek Obsidian Dig

Location: Davis Creek California
Date: Wednesday, September 1, 2010 through Monday, September 6, 2010
Time: We will be digging for various kinds of obsidian including: rainbow, pink lady, golden sheen, needles, etc.
Notes: Harold and Connie Silver will be
heading down there on Wednesday, September 1st.  Come down whenever
you can.

 

Here is a basic schedule:
Thursday: Scout out and schedule digs
Friday night: Davis Creek Store for bar-b-que/ Field trips start
Saturday night: Hobo stew (bring a can of veggies
or meat)
Sunday night: pot luck
Monday: head home

 

This is a dry camp (nice bathrooms) so bring water etc.
Pick up a permit at the Davis Creek Store. Harold and Connie

RAGMS Fun Day at the Crater Rock Museum

Location: Crater Rock Museum
Date: Saturday, September 11th, 2010
Time: 9:00AM
Notes: Anyone who wishes to do tailgate sales should be at the museum
parking lot by 9:00 to set up.  There is a potluck lunch in the multi-purpose room
at 12:00. Please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert. Harold and Connie Silver will furnish Sandwiches and juice.
Please bring a spare bucket of rock for a give away.

 

August 2010

Perseid Meteor Shower viewing

Location: Mt. Ashland

Date: Thursday, August 12, 2010

Time: 8:30:00 PM-1 AM

Notes: We will meet at the Crater Rock Museum at 8:30 PM then drive to the top of Mt. Ashland where we will watch the meteor shower.  At this time in August there are up to 100 meteors per hour during the Perseid Meteor Shower (Hey that rhymes! No extra charge for that...) Bring a chair, a snack and something warm to wear in case it gets cold. 

 

Ochoco thunder eggs and fish fossils

Location: Prineville Claim Dig near Prineville, Oregon.

Date: Sunday August 15, 2010

Time: 8:00 AM-? (This is an all day trip.  This location is remote.)

Notes: This location is near thunder eggs, fish and other fossils, ammonite concretions, etc. There is dry camping (no running water, no restrooms) at the Prineville claim dig site. Closest public restroom is about 5 miles away.

We will meet at the Apple Peddler Restaurant at 8:30AM. It is located at the intersection of Highway 140 and Highway 62.  You will need a bucket and a rock pick or other digging tools. Don't forget to bring plenty of water, food and sunscreen.  This location is remote.

 

Coffee Creek Garnets

Location: Coffee Creek near Tiller

Date: Sunday August 22, 2010

Time: 8:00 AM

Notes: We will meet at the Crater Rock Museum at 8am then drive out to Coffee Creek to look in the creek for tiny but beautiful garnets. You may want to bring along buckets, gold pans and screens as well as small bottles or plastic bags to put your garnets in.

 

Huge Inventory Sale at the Rock-E-Points Rock Shop

Location: Klamath Falls
Date: Sunday, August 29, 2010
Time: 8:00 AM-?
Notes: Rock-E-Points Rock Shop is having a huge inventory sale with literally tons of rough and finished minerals from all over the counrty and the world. We will meet at the Dollar Store on the corner of Highway 62 and Highway 140 in White City. Bring a bag or bucket to put your rocks in and a spray bottle to spray them with, some water to drink and something for lunch if you would like. Don't forget to bring some money for all the amazing treasures you will want to buy.

Rhodonite

Location: Near Grants Pass

Date: July 18, 2010

Time: 9 AM at the Crater Rock Museum

Notes: We will leave the museum shortly after 9 AM. Please bring lunch and plenty of water.  A rock pick and a bucket are essential tools and don't forget the sunscreen!
